Glaucoma Examination

Glaucoma is a term for a group of eye disorders which result in damage to the optic nerve.

Glaucoma is generally painless and tends to develop slowly over time, often having no symptoms until the disease has progressed significantly. It is treated with either glaucoma medication to lower the pressure in the eye, or with various pressure-reducing glaucoma surgeries. Glaucoma has been called the “silent thief of sight” because the loss of vision often occurs gradually over a long period of time, and symptoms only occur when the disease is quite advanced.

Your eye examination at Evans & McMahon Eyecare Plus will screen for glaucoma, however if you have a family history of glaucoma or any signs of glaucoma you will be asked back to the practice for more specialised analysis. This examination will pay special attention to the health of the back of your eye and we will document the health with digital retinal imaging and/or Ocular CT scans so we can communicate any concerns to your doctor. With our visual field analyser we can assess whether any of your sight has been lost.
